Sophie & Adam’s August wedding at The Walled Gardens at Cowdray, West Sussex, was everything a relaxed summer wedding should be. Sunshine, beautiful gardens, the people closest to them and a lovely sense of everyone coming together to celebrate as a family.
Their pastel summer rainbow of lemon, lilac, pink, mint green, baby blue and peach brought a fresh, playful feel to the day. The colours worked so naturally against the garden setting, with pretty florals, elegant table details and the warm tones of the surrounding countryside creating a lovely balance between relaxed and refined.
One of the most special parts of the day was having Sophie and Adam’s children involved as their page boys. There’s something particularly lovely about photographing a wedding where family is at the heart of everything, capturing those little interactions, proud smiles and moments together that mean so much beyond the wedding day itself.
After the garden ceremony, guests enjoyed drinks on the lawn, with garden games, a fantastic live singer and a caricature artist keeping everyone entertained. There was such a lovely atmosphere to photograph, with friends and family able to relax, catch up and enjoy the sunshine without the day ever feeling rushed.
As the sun began to set, we were treated to the most gorgeous golden light, with the atmospheric ruins of Cowdray providing an incredible backdrop for Sophie and Adam’s couple portraits. It was one of those evenings when the setting, the light and the two of them together came into their own, giving us the chance to create some really special images.
Keeping to their summer garden party theme, dessert was served out on the lawn as the evening light softened, before things took a wonderfully fun turn. After their first dance, guests were treated to a line dancing lesson, bringing a little country music spirit to the celebrations and getting everyone ready for the party ahead!

Robyn & Mike’s Summer Wedding at Upwaltham Barns, Chichester, West Sussex.
There are some weddings that feel particularly special to photograph, and Robyn & Mike’s day at Upwaltham was certainly one of them. They were married in the beautiful church at Upwaltham, a place with a very special connection with many generations of his family having married there before them.
The intimate ceremony felt incredibly personal, surrounded by close family and friends, before everyone headed back to the barns for a second celebration and blessing. Upwaltham Barns is equally important to Mike. He grew up around the farm surrounded by his brothers and cousins, so there were memories around every corner.
I knew how important it was to capture more than just the wedding itself for Robyn and Mike. I wanted their photographs to tell the story of this incredible location and venues. From the church and the barns, to the fields, courtyard and tucked-away gardens, we made sure to include the places that have shaped so many family memories over the years.
The styling fitted the setting beautifully, with a relaxed country feel and a little twist on tradition. Sky-blue bridesmaids sat alongside the soft greys and blues worn by Mike and the groomsmen, with hints of colour and pattern in their floral ties. Wild meadow flowers brought a wonderful rainbow of colour throughout the day, giving everything that slightly wild, cottage-garden feel.
After their church ceremony, Robyn’s Maid of Honour led a special blessing back at the barns, including a handfasting ceremony. It was a lovely way to bring their wider group of guests into the celebrations and added another personal layer to a day they described so perfectly as “wholesome fun with a traditional twist.”
There was plenty to enjoy during the drinks reception. Guests were treated to cocktails and craft beer from the Tipsy Tuk Tuk, while ice cream and handmade canapés flowed around the courtyard. It was the kind of reception where people could relax, catch up and just enjoy themselves. The natural laughter that was shared in the candid moments shone through in the photographs, capturing the personalities and relationships within this wonderful group of people.
As the day began to wind down, we took a little time for some photographs of the two of them around the farm. The gorgeous evening light over the fields gave us the perfect warm, atmospheric portraits, while the gardens provided a completely different feel as the light slowly disappeared.
Photographing this wedding was particularly meaningful to me. I have known the Upwaltham family since I first started my photography career, and over the years I have had the privilege of watching so many members of the family grow up, celebrate milestones and get married. To now be chosen to photograph Robyn and Mike’s wedding, in a place that has been such a big part of their family history, was a real honour.

Becky & Matt's Goodwood Hotel Spring Wedding
Back in the day, wedding photography was all about perfecting the still pose, albeit awkwardly standing in line with your new in-laws! It was about knowing there was only one chance at each click of the camera to smile your best smile, whilst hoping your hair was in place. There was a ‘no-going-back’ mentality that accompanied each capture and thus, waiting for the outcome of the resulting album prints was an anxious affair!
Thank goodness times have changed, enabling wedding photography to be so much more than the collection of numb expressions distilled in starchy, formulaic portraits. Of course these days we have the luxury of second chances and limitless opportunities to capture each and every single moment. What I loved about Becky and Matt’s wedding photography was how they fully embraced the modern approach, being willing to experiment with the unconventional and classic compositions. Their openness to creativity was inspiring and it also meant that we all had the best fun on their very special wedding day!
